Mandra was born during Les Stroud's trip to the Carpathians while filming new episodes of Survivorman. The 1,450 km long mountain range stretches across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia. In many places, the Carpathians are an area untouched by human hands, where 2.5-kilometer-high inaccessible peaks are adjacent to picturesque valleys. In addition to the mountainous, unpredictable weather, the Carpathians also offer a wealth of flora and fauna, with the largest population of brown bears. Lynxes, wolves and chamois also live in the backwoods.
The historical background is also rich in events. The Carpathians are the meeting point of Europe and Asia. This is Transylvania, the homeland of the legendary Count Dracula.
Mandra was created on a film set. Les Stroud used prototypes during filming. The corrections and the final appearance are the result of Les' experience and the knowledge of Anders Haglund - one of the heads of Helle. Mandra is Romanian for "Pride" - the same name was given to the hill from which the rescue team picked up Les after the end of his expedition.
