We’ve been working hard at Helle for the past two years to create what we believe to be the ultimate all-round outdoor knife. Even before we launched the Nord, we knew we wanted to create a smaller sibling. Something that retained the multi-grip capabilities and practical blade shape of our bushcraft machine, but was smaller, lighter, and therefore easier to take on everyday adventures.
That’s why we’re so proud to introduce the Nordlys. Nordlys means Aurora Borealis in Norwegian. Lys means both light and beauty. That represents Nord well. It retains all the innovative features of its bigger sibling, but packs them into a much smaller package. The Nordlys’ 12.4 cm handle is 1.3 cm shorter than the Nord, but still provides room for a front grip for finer cuts and a handle with a head when chopping.
The blade also has the same shape as its larger sibling, with a slight drop point and a classic Scandinavian grind. However, it is noticeably shorter – at 12.2 centimetres, it is about the same length as most Norwegian all-purpose outdoor knives. The blade is 3.1 mm thick and made of very strong 14C28N Alleima stainless steel. The total weight of the Nordlys is therefore just 210 grams, meaning that you get a very balanced and lightweight knife for a full-tang knife.
Over the past few years, we have tested the Nordlys ourselves on long and short hikes, camping and bushcraft. We have used the Nordlys to prepare food, make firelighters, throw sparks from iron rods, sharpen sticks and much, much more. We have sent it to our ambassadors and other product testers who have done what they like.
The feedback was unanimous: with the Nordlys, you get a knife that can handle anything you throw at it, without feeling heavy on your belt as you get from A to B. As such, our new Knife is a good choice for anyone who likes to go out with a knife on their belt but still wants a knife that can handle heavier tasks like chopping branches and making kindling.
