How does a hidden camera and bug detector work?
Professional detectors combine two independent methods. The first is optical detection: every camera lens - even one that is switched off - reflects light like a cat's eye. The detector illuminates the room and highlights lens reflections, so you can find even a 1 mm pinhole camera hidden in a smoke detector, clock or charger. The second method is transmission scanning: cameras and bugs have to send their data somehow, so the detector listens for WiFi traffic across 2.4 / 5.2 / 5.8 GHz and for radio signals. The two methods complement each other - optics finds devices that record locally, transmission scanning finds those hidden out of sight.
How to choose a camera detector?
Pay attention to three things. First - detection modes: a bare RF LED is not enough, look for devices that combine optics with a network scan. Second - how results are presented: a screen that shows detected devices saves a lot of nerves compared to beeping you have to interpret yourself. Third - sensitivity (the lower the dBm value, the better) and detection range. The rest is ergonomics: battery life, USB-C charging and a size that fits carry-on luggage.
When is it worth sweeping a room?
The most common situations are stays in new places - hotels, guest houses, Airbnb or Booking apartments - and rentals: a flat after previous tenants or handed back after a lease. At work: a meeting room before a confidential conversation, an office after a service visit, a company car. Hidden cameras in short-term rentals are a documented, recurring problem - and sweeping a room with a detector takes a few minutes.
